Community-Based Physician Education helps improve the identification and management of overweight/obese youth, beyond those served directly by BCP, by educating community pediatricians and family practice physicians in childhood obesity. Many community physicians do not appreciate the extent of the epidemic of childhood obesity or know the appropriate identification and clinical management of obesity and associated disorders. Live Light …. Live Right program delivers educational seminars (including the distribution of patient education materials and other resources) for community physicians in issues related to obesity management.
The Structured Physical Activity Program At Safe Sites addresses a major barrier to weight control in poor, inner-city communities. The absence of parental supervision and the lack of safe places for children and youth to play and engage in physical exercise contribute to a culture of television watching, video game playing, and snacking on unhealthy foods after school. Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are the two essential components of weight management. Live Light… Live Right takes full advantage of the resources in the community, including community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, the schools and the New York City Housing Authority and Parks Department Recreation Centers. Patterns of exercise and physical activity adopted early are likely to carry into adulthood and affect health status throughout life. Live Light… Live Right has started the Train-the-Trainer Program. Through this program members of the community are being trained to serve as supervisors of the exercise programs at city recreation centers and faith-based institutions in the community.
