Live Light, Live Right is a comprehensive non-profit program providing children and youth ages 2 -19 with expert health care, knowledge, and support to help them make healthy choices to last a lifetime. A hospital and community-based partnership, Live Light serves overweight and obese children, 40 percent of whom live below the poverty line, who are at high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Services include specialized medical care, tailored physical fitness training, and behavioral and nutritional counseling and education for the entire family. Since inception in 2001, Live Light has helped over 2,000 children improve their diet, exercise habits, and their health. The novel, multi-disciplinary approach has resulted in positive health outcomes, including the reduction of Body Mass Index scores, cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin levels for nearly three-quarters of all participants.
The program is based at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, a nonprofit, teaching hospital and IRS 501c3 tax-exempt organization. The program has been generously supported by the Robin Hood Foundation, Maverick Capital Foundation, and the New York State Department of Health and the WellPoint Foundation, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield’s parent company’s foundation.
